Philosophy: small gestures, real change

“A hug is a silent way of saying you are safe here.”

Free Hugs is a simple civic practice: share human warmth in public space, with consent and care. It challenges isolation, celebrates dignity, and reminds us that we belong. No fees, no data capture, no branding — just kindness.

This page helps you invite others in a way that’s welcoming, inclusive, and safe. Customize the time and place above, then print, post, or share digitally.

How‑to host a Free Hugs moment

1 Prepare
  • Bring a small sign that clearly says “FREE HUGS (only if you want)”
  • Wear something visible and comfy; consider a bright scarf or pin
  • Hydrate, breathe, and set a kind intention
Place sign mockup or icon set here
2 Invite
  • Stand where people can see your sign without blocking passage
  • Smile softly; don’t insist — an invitation is enough
  • Offer alternatives: “high‑five?”, “fist‑bump?”, “warm hello?”
Place icons for hug/high‑five/fist‑bump here
3 Hug (with consent)
  • Ask clearly: “Would you like a hug?” — wait for a verbal “yes” or open gesture
  • Keep it brief; let the other person guide duration and pressure
  • Release gently; say thanks; invite them to pass it on
4 Close & reflect
  • Thank your space (and any staff or organizers)
  • Debrief with your buddy — what felt good, what to improve
  • Share a reflection or photo if you have consent

FAQ

Is it really free?

Yes. No donations, no data, no obligations — only warmth if you want it.

What if someone says no?

We celebrate “no”. Consent means every answer is welcome.

Can kids participate?

Only with their guardian’s visible consent and presence — many hosts choose adult‑only moments to keep it simple.

How long should a hug last?

Let the other person lead. A brief 1–3 seconds is usually perfect; longer only if mutually comfortable.
